- Robinia pseudoacacia, commonly known as black locust in the eastern US is prized wood by shipwrights for its naturally rot/pest resistant qualities.
- Black Locust is native to the eastern US and has a Janka hardness of 1700lbf. It is naturally rot resistant and has an interlocking grain structure that makes it ideal for use in bench vises. It has a beautiful yellow/orange color when green that matures to a burnt orange with oxidation. It is not commonly used for wooden vises due to the challenges with machining the wood due to its hardness and grain structure. Conventional thread cutting tooling does not perform well with this type of wood. Special tooling was created at our shop to make this product possible.
- Disclaimer
- Wooden vise screws are not like carbon steel lead screws found in modern carpentry vices. They cannot be tightened to the same level of torque. Care must be taken with their use to not over crank when engaging work holding. Natural wood product’s can have minor defects and blemishes that arise during the manufacturing process.
